THE NORTH

The north of Portugal is a region characterised by a lower population density and greater contact with nature. The north is home to the Gerês nature reserve, the Serra da Estrela mountain range and historic cities such as Porto, Guimarães and Braga.

Major city: Porto

Porto is one of Portugal's major cities and can be considered its second capital. Among the city's great and varied attractions, we can highlight the Ribeirinha area, where tourists and locals can enjoy themselves beside the River Douro; the Parque da Cidade, one of Portugal's largest urban parks; and the Casa da Música, a unique work by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Located at the mouth of the River Douro, the city is also the starting point for river cruises up the Douro to discover the country's oldest and most important wine region.

THE CENTRE

The Greater Lisbon region, in the centre of the country, is the most densely populated area in Portugal. Almost a third of all Portuguese live here. This leads to a wide range of services, with banks, schools, supermarkets and other conveniences never more than a few minutes away.

The city of Lisbon is today one of Europe's most charming and cosmopolitan capitals. Known as Olissipo at the time of the Roman Empire, the city grew up on the banks of the River Tagus, with the castle of São Jorge protecting the city from the top of one of the famous ‘seven hills’. A city that is both modern and classic, Lisbon is home to some of the most important universities in the country, as well as countless centres of cultural interest - such as the Teatro D. Maria or the Coliseu dos Recreios - and the best entertainment venues such as restaurants, resorts, nightclubs and various events.

Of particular note is the town of Cascais, known as the ‘Portuguese Riviera’ and used to receiving foreign visitors for centuries. This is where you'll find the Estoril Casino, the largest casino in Europe, as well as the Cascais Marina - an international reference and the venue for important Olympic sailing and sports competitions.

This is where the best private condominiums in the Lisbon region are concentrated. Quinta da Marinha, Quinta Patino or Condomínio Penha Longa are some of the options for those looking for the best properties Portugal has to offer.

THE SOUTH

The south is Portugal's main holiday destination, both for locals and foreigners. It is very popular in the summer, when there is a lot of activity and excitement. It's a good place to buy a holiday home or flats to rent out during the holiday season.

It is in the Algarve, in the extreme south of the country, that we find the so-called ‘golden triangle’, the area most sought after by foreign investors, both for living and for renting. The golden triangle, 15 minutes from Faro International Airport, is made up of Quinta do Lago, Vale de Lobo and Almançil.

In addition to these highly refined and exclusive residential areas, there is also the Vilamoura marina, award-winning golf courses and the Algarve racetrack.

However, none of these qualities compare to Europe's mildest climate, with the highest annual sun exposure in the whole of the European continent.

The rest of the year, the south becomes a quieter place, but it never ceases to be extremely welcoming.
